The
majority of natural gas produced in Texas is not flared, though the amount of
flaring that does occur in the Lone Star State increased 400% from 2009 to
2012, according to the Texas Railroad Commission. The explosive rate of
drilling across the state has long outpaced the equipment, supplies, manpower
and services necessary to construct gas gathering pipelines. It’s literally
cash going up in flames.
While
flaring is a method of incinerating impurities in raw natural gas and carbon
dioxide, without the proper equipment in place, much of the wasted fossil fuel
is expelled directly into the atmosphere. In addition to billions of wasted
dollars, the expulsion of this gas wreaks havoc on surrounding environments,
often resulting in severe health issues for humans and wildlife.
Citing
newspaper and industry analysis, the Eagle Ford Shale in rural South Texas has
earned the disgraced badge as the state’s top-flaring region since 2009. The
shale is accountable for nearly two-thirds of gas lost in 2012 – representing
21 billion cubic feet.
Nearly
50 miles wide and 400 miles long, the Eagle Ford Shale on a map resembles a
sloppy Nike “swoosh” starting in southwest Texas, where the drilling activity
occurs, and stretching northeast into the heart of the state. The shale
bypasses but remains in close proximity to the sprawling Houston metropolis,
where a company called Well Power offers an industry solution.
The
company holds the licensing rights to a mobile, high-yield technology capable
of processing waste natural gas into “clean power” and engineered fuels. These
Micro Refinery Units (MRU) offer the ability to create value from natural gas
waste while enabling wider access to energy, improved environmental conditions
and economic development for local populations.
The
company’s plan is to provide its technology in conjunction with full-service
engineering, design, construction, modular fabrication, maintenance and
construction management services. Targeting a client base in the upstream areas
of exploration and production, Well Power will also offer consulting services,
process assessments, facility appraisals, feasibility studies, technology
evaluations, project finance structuring and support, and multi-client
subscription services.
Gas
flaring isn’t unique to Texas; it’s a national concern. In addition to
licensing rights in Texas, Well Power has secured the first right of refusal on
other U.S. states. The company’s growing reputation in the clean energy
industry, backed by the proprietary MRUs, positions Well Power as a competitive
force with a powerful solution to the nation’s gas waste challenges.
