Banjo & Matilda, Inc. (BANJ) Steadfast ‘Ocean Lifestyle’ Fashion Strategy Points to Global Growth

Banjo & Matilda, Paddington, Australia, was founded in Bondi Beach Australia and started its first knitwear collection in 2008. The collection included three cashmere styles woven in a business model aimed at creating an Australian beach-lifestyle sweater market.

Founders Belynda and Ben Macpherson wanted to create sweaters that were luxurious and fit the freedom of their beach lifestyle in a range of quality knitwear. The result became sweaters manufactured from premium, natural yarns like fine cashmere, silk, and organic cotton. The appeal would embody the opposite of ‘fast-fashion’ in sustainability and longevity.

With a mindset of ‘benevolence is the new luxury,’ Banjo & Matilda embarked on ‘The Sweater Exchange’ in 2009. Partnering with Mission Australia, ‘The Sweater Exchange’ collects previously owned sweaters from its global customer base and gives them to underprivileged women and children once per year. Belynda Macpherson says, “By virtually giving the ‘clothes off your back’ we facilitate an attitude of ‘giving back’ which becomes more and more important for our generation and the generations of our children.”

Globally recognized for their statement sweaters and cashmere basics, Banjo & Matilda’s produces new knitwear collections each season while shipping their products everywhere from New York to New Delhi from their design studios in Sydney, Australia. Stocked at recognized international retailers such as Net-a-Porter, Shopbop, Harvey Nichols London, Neiman Marcus, Intermix New York, David Jones Australia and major department stores in Germany and the Middle East, Banjo & Matilda continues to experience growth by adding new customers daily. With its emphasis on quality, BANJ cashmere sweaters are spun with natural and ethically sourced yarns from goats in the mountains of Inner Mongolia.

The company is actively seeking to add channel partners through its affiliate program. The invitation only arrangement is described in detail on its award winning website. Candidates are expected to have a first-class, fashion-forward website to be considered.
