Sibling Group Holdings, Inc. (SIBE) & Urban Planet Mobile – Striving to Create High-Value Mobile Learning Partnerships

Since the advent of massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by new education ventures like Coursera and edX, online learning has grown in popularity internationally. With the proliferation of mobile phones and tablets into most hands and most homes, now is also an exciting time for mobile learning.

Urban Planet Media & Entertainment Corporation is one of the leading innovators of mobile learning. This privately-held mobile media company is making strides in education, healthcare and literacy with its high-value content and solutions. The company has business dealings in forty countries and products that are available worldwide. With such a global reach, it is little surprise that the Sibling Group Holdings, an educational technology holding company, announced its intent to acquire Urban Planet this past October 2014.

Urban Planet develops quality educational products that use digital technology and mobile devices to reach people everywhere, particularly those with limited or non-existent access to high-quality education. Urban Planet creates and distributes content for English language learners, and recently expanded into new areas such as literacy and mobile health.

Urban Planet’s latest product is being offered via a partnership with Kraatu, a Dubai-based mobile services provider. Through this partnership, it is anticipated that Urban Planet’s principal service, Urban English, will go live with Du, one of the largest mobile operators in the United Arab Emirates, by year end.

The UAE is home to people from over 100 nationalities and, while the English language is the most effective means of communication, a majority of residents are still unfamiliar with or not fluent in the language. With its innovative content and delivery mechanism, Urban Planet provides a perfect platform to address this challenge. Urban Planet’s innovative SMS with IVR delivery, in particular, ensures that Urban English lessons can be accessed via any type of mobile phone, even the most basic and feature phones.

The Urban English service will be launched in multiple languages including Urban English for Arabic Speakers and Urban English for Bengali Speakers, with a variety of courses offered in each language including English for Beginners, English for Tour Guides, and English for Restaurant workers. Plans to expand the service for Hindi and Pashto speakers are also in the works.

Urban Planet delivers Urban English, a daily audio English lesson, via email, SMS, IVR, WhatsApp and other social messenger services used by millions of people around the world. Urban English is widely recognized and widely distributed, and has over 80,000 daily mobile subscribers in the Middle East region and 400,000 daily subscribers in over 30 countries around the world.

Strong partnerships have led to the Urban Planet’s success and growing demand for its solutions in the Middle East and throughout the world. The UAE will become the sixth country to launch Urban Planet Mobile in the Middle East. The launches in Iraq and Yemen occurred earlier this year while the ones in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kuwait happened in 2013.
