When Apple reported record
first-quarter profit of $18 billion the company set a quarterly record – not
just for the company itself, but for the entire history of corporate
enterprise. The tech giant sold nearly 75 million iPhones in three months –
that’s an average of 34,000 iPhones every HOUR, according to company CEO Tim
Cook. For yet another perspective, a CNN Money report noted that the iPhone
nearly outsold the ENTIRE PC industry, which collectively sold fewer than 84
million computers last quarter. All this to evidence something market experts
already knew but perhaps underestimated: smartphones are on fire and Apple is
fanning the flame.
IDC in March 2014 forecast
that the global smartphone market, which reached 1.0 billion units shipped in
2013, will reach 1.7 billion units in 2018 with CAGR of 11.5%. Of course, this
estimate was before Apple’s monster performance.
The allure of smartphones
lies within their increasing variety of app capabilities, security and overall
innovation. You can verbally tell your phone to call your mother, turn it into
a TV remote, use it to track your calories, do your shopping, watch a movie,
map your way across the country or book a flight to the other side of the
world. The possibilities are seemingly endless.
Another enticement is the
incredible amount of personalization both in aesthetics and function. This
segment of the market is where Canada-based WordLogic participates. WordLogic
is the developer of patented predictive text input technology. While
smartphones are obviously a central application of the technology, WordLogic’s
interface is also compatible with tablets, keyboard enabled phones and PCs.
WordLogic’s iKnowU
keyboard is a feature-rich technology that becomes more accurate with each use
by “learning” the users style and preference. iKnowU’s WordChunking™ and
Gesturing™ features enable the user to chain together phrases and create whole
sentences in a matter of seconds. Based on user history, the technology
predicts name of people, places, email addresses, websites and other words and
displays possible predictions to let the user select the right word or phrase.
Right handed, left handed; it doesn’t matter. The keyboard adjusts its actions
based upon the setup of the user. The keyboard can also be customized with
different themes and layouts.
Among other WordLogic
technologies is the company’s patent-pending Reach™ technology which is able to
recognize the context of what the user is typing and instantly provides access
to the relevant app or data source to retrieve and share information. Whether
the user is writing a text, email, IM or social update, he or she is able to
“reach” into these other sources and pull key information into the message
they’re composing.
For business clients,
WordLogic creates fully customized cloud-based company dictionary that enables
company/industry specific words and phrases. The dictionary can be centrally
managed and continuously updated so they synch across every worker’s device,
including PC, tablet and mobile. The result is fast entry speeds with full
accuracy across the workforce. WordLogic for Business primarily caters to the
healthcare, utilities, legal and consumer electronics industry.
Diversity of application
and customizable features are what situate WordLogic in the midst of mammoth
potential. In fact, in November Apple approved the launch of WordLogic’s iOS8
version of the IKnowU keyboard with Reach technology in the Apple App Store. If
Apple’s smartphone sales are of any inclination, WordLogic is sitting on a gold
mine of opportunity ripe for the taking.
