Medical device and diagnostic company Eternity Healthcare announced it is
developing a noninvasive sugar monitoring device for diabetics that uses saliva
instead of blood. The technology employs an ultra-sensitive sugar monitor and
an added sensor for salivary amylase enzyme activity.
Eternity Healthcare is the first company to focus on developing an
alternative saliva-based glucose monitoring test. The device will utilize two
parameters of diabetes physiological changes to provide diabetics with blood
sugar level results that are more accurate. It is anticipated that the test
will reduce patients’ reliance on the current method of finger pricking and
blood collection.
The major providers of glucose monitoring devices are big pharmaceutical
companies such as Abbott Diabetic Care, Inc.; Bayer Healthcare; AG LifeScan,
Inc.; Roche Diagnostics Corp.; Medtronic, Inc.; DexCom, Inc. and others. More
than 10 million glucose monitor devices and several hundred-million test strips
are sold each year, according the Centers for Disease Control. Worldwide, the
market for blood glucose monitoring devices was $8.9 billion in 2010, and that
market is expected to grow to $16 billion this year.
A biopharmaceutical company, Eternity Healthcare has technologies in
diagnostics and medical devices. The company is currently focused on products
that target diabetic needs, including a needle-free injection device. The
company’s products are sold to healthcare professionals, pharmacies, and
directly to consumers. Eternity Healthcare currently has numerous additional
diagnostic tests and medical devices in development for metabolic,
cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
