BioSolar, Inc. (BSRC) Signs New Sales Rep Deal that Targets Asian Manufacturers

BioSolar, Inc., the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce bio-based materials from renewable plant sources that reduce the cost of photovoltaic (PV) solar modules, today announced a sales rep deal with ShinHa, Inc., a Korean firm that represents large Asian PV panel manufacturers. The Asian manufacturers will utilize the company’s longer lasting, cheaper and greener Bio-Backsheet product in the production of solar panels sold to the fast growing North American market. BioSolar materials can be dropped into conventional manufacturing processes and help reduce the cost per watt through the use of lower cost bio-based materials.

BioSolar announced in July that it had received BioPreferred Product Labeling from the USDA for its semi-durable films. The BioPreferred program’s purpose is to reduce petroleum consumption, increase the use of renewable resources, better manage the carbon cycle, and, contribute to reducing adverse environmental and health impacts. The USDA BioPreferred Product label designates categories of biobased products that are preferred by Federal agencies when making purchasing decisions and enabling the potential for high-volume sales to government agencies.

“As prices for solar panels continue to drop, manufacturers are searching for alternative PV components that cost less while matching or exceeding the durability of incumbent components. Our BioBacksheet, which costs less than incumbent back sheet with similar durability, has become very appealing to large Asian PV panel manufacturers that export to the North American market. New research shows that the North America will be the fastest growing PV market over the next five years,” said Dr. David Lee, BioSolar’s CEO, in a press release on Tuesday. “Because we achieved the highest possible bio-based contents rating from the USDA, we are seeing increased interest in our BioBacksheet from foreign PV panel manufacturers pursuing sales to the U.S. government

The BioBacksheet is made of non-petroleum-based, non-toxic, recyclable castor beans instead of commonly used petroleum-based plastics. The material used in the back sheet is more durable than the traditional material. Unlike other panels with 3 layers that can become de-laminated with time, BioSolar’s backsheets include only 1 layer. Panels using BioSolar’s backsheet will also be cheaper since they use less of the expensive materials of solar panels.
