Solar Wind Energy, Inc. (SWET) CEO Interview Touches on Key Points

The Wall Street Transcript, a long-standing publication and Web site that issues industry reports featuring interviews with top company executives, recently interviewed Solar Wind Energy CEO Ronald W. Pickett, as part of a recently published Alternative Energy Report. Solar Wind Energy is a Maryland based renewable energy company that has developed a radical new approach to capturing the sun’s energy in a way that avoids many of the issues common to traditional wind and solar technologies.

Their design, verified through extensive engineering research, is based upon a long-standing principle that cooler air tends to fall. By spraying water into air, enclosed within a very large space such as a giant cooling tower, the air becomes cooler through the evaporation process. The cooler air falls, drawing in more air which is then cooled and falls, and the process continues until there is a massive downdraft of air generating surprisingly high wind speeds of falling air. The falling air is then diverted to wind turbines which convert the energy into electricity. The system basically converts solar heat, available in the air day or night, into physical wind energy, regardless of whether or not there is any initial wind.

It’s a remarkable idea, but its effectiveness depends upon a number of variables, such as the height of the tower, air temperature, and humidity. One of the key points mentioned in the interview is a special energy calculator program the company uses to combine and work with all of these variables. It’s a program they developed with Dr. Straka from the University of Oklahoma and Dr. Sanka from Georgia Tech. The program evaluates historical weather conditions at given locations, in combination with physical requirements for the company’s energy generation system.

The complex calculations result in a projection of exactly how tall and how wide a given energy generation tower should be for that location, together with the amount of water that would be required at specific intervals, to generate a certain amount of electricity. Since the system can run day or night, any time of the year, whether there is wind or not, the energy calculation program effectively determines how much power can be generated.

Mr. Pickett also discussed the recent measures called for by the federal government to reduce carbon emissions and increase funding for clean energy. Although there is obviously no way to currently predict exactly how such moves might benefit his company, he made clear that Solar Wind Energy is doing exactly what the government is seeking, offering a cost effective way to generate energy with a zero-carbon footprint. However, he does not consider such initiatives necessary to get their first tower built.
