Burcon NutraScience Corp. (BUR) Semi-Works Plant Now Operational

Leader in developing functionally and nutritionally valuable plant-based proteins, Burcon NutraScience (TSX:BU) (Nasdaq:BUR), has completed the startup and commissioning of its semi-works plant in Winnipeg for its pea protein Peazazz®, meeting initial scheduling goals.

The newly commissioned plant will provide access to commercial-scale equipment, allowing for the production of large quantities, which may be required by certain significant food and beverage makers looking to conduct full-scale market evaluations of Peazazz. In addition, the plant supports the company’s ongoing discussions for the production and marketing of Peazazz with potential companies looking to partner with Burcon.

“The commissioning of our Peazazz semi-works plant marks a significant advancement in the commercialization of this amazing pea protein,” stated Johann F. Tergesen, Burcon’s president and COO. “We had already established the unique functional and nutritional attributes of Peazazz with our pilot-scale plant to produce small samples, and now we can demonstrate how Peazazz can be economically produced using commercial-scale equipment.”

While the new semi-works plant allows for the utilization of commercial-scale equipment, it will currently only be used to produce the amounts of Peazazz needed for targeted market development with prospective product partners. Functioning as a model for potential manufactures to emulate, the plant boasts short production times, allowing for faster market introductions.

Burcon’s official launch of Peazazz took place at the 2013 Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Chicago, held a few weeks ago. Well received by food and beverage companies, Peazazz‘s uniquely clean flavor characteristics have sparked the interest of many potential partners.
