SurePure, a company engaged in a green alternative to pasteurisation and chemicals called liquid photopurification, has signed a multi-year royalty commercial deal with liquid egg company IPAY (Izmir Pastorize Yumurta) of Izmir, Turkey.
The patented SurePure Turbulator design is increases a liquid’s exposure to UV-C light and enables greater efficacy and consistency in purification. IPAY intends to implement SurePure’s photopurification technology in order to improve both the shelf life and brand quality of its egg products. SurePure will receive approximately $300,000 over the five-year term of the agreement.
IPAY’s products include egg white, whole egg and egg yolk. All of these offered products come in bulk to industrial customers, smaller cartons for retail and bag-in-box for the catering trade. IPAY is the only company currently serving the non-industrial Turkish market, where the shelf life of a product is critical.
This commercial and breakthrough application follows academic research that states and confirms UV-C’s ability to decontaminate against the main egg contaminant, salmonella. Similar studies demonstrate that UV-C treatments do not affect the rheological properties and the protein profile of liquid egg fractions and that no adverse effects on consumer acceptance of egg products processed by UV-C. Additionally, the use of UV-C does not significantly alter overall appearance or taste compared to egg products that are thermally processed.
