SunOpta, Inc. (STKL) Announces Expansion of Its Fogo-Origin Coffee Business in the Republic of Cape Verde

SunOpta Inc. is a leading global company focused on natural, organic and specialty foods and natural health products. The company specializes in sourcing, processing and packaging of natural and organic food products vertically from seed through packaged products.

The company today announced that the SunOpta International Foods Group will expand its fair trade and organic coffee business with the development of operations in the Republic of Cape Verde. This is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Africa.

Trabocca, working with a local Cape Verde partner, has formed Fogo Coffee Spirit Ltd., which will establish a coffee processing facility to produce the first certified organic high quality coffee in the Republic of Cape Verde. Trabocca specializes in sourcing certified organic and fair trade specialty coffees from around the globe.

This coffee will be the first coffee on the world market from the volcanic island of Fogo. This island is well known for its grapes and wines, thanks to the rich, fertile soil. Fogo Coffee will purchase red cherries from roughly 100 coffee out-grower farmers on the island. It plans to create a platform for sustainable agriculture on the island.
