Microvision, Inc., a global leader in miniature image display and capture systems for mobile devices, announced today that it has received important approval regarding a key component of the company’s PicoP display engines. The Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems in Germany, an internationally recognized R&D institute for MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems), tested Microvision’s wide-angle MEMS scanning mirror, and validated shock-resistance susceptibility performance for the micro-sized device. Shock and drop reliability is critical for MEMS products handled by consumers on a daily basis.
Microvision’s VP of R&D, Sid Madhavan, said “I’m pleased to confirm that our newest generation MEMS scanner has been successfully tested externally and the results are very promising. Our MEMS scanning mirror exceeds twice the shock performance requirements provided by Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partners. This means that when our MEMS scanning mirror is embedded in a typical hand held device it will exceed the required shock orientations of a 4 foot drop test on concrete in all shock orientations.”
The MEMS scanning mirror is less than one square millimeter in area, about the head of a pin, and yet it can scan both horizontally and vertically, controlling a single beam of light at very high-speeds to create a complete full color video image with little power consumption and no projection lenses. Example application: cell phones able to project scaled-up images for easy viewing, instead of requiring viewers to huddle around a tiny display.
Microvision, founded in 1993, has always been involved in light scanning technology, the use of a single scanning beam of light to project images onto surfaces, for commercial and government applications. Now the company is producing ultra-miniature projection display systems that can be embedded in a variety of next generation products, such as wearable displays, vehicle displays, and even cell phones. They are also developing a MEMS scan engine for use in commercial bar code scanning.
