VeriChip Corp. (CHIP) & RECEPTORS LLC Announce Successful Phase 1 Completion of Implantable Glucose Sensing RFID Microchip

VeriChip Corporation and its partner in product development, RECEPTORS LLC, said today that they have made an important advancement in the design of a radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip that can be implanted in living organisms, or “in vivo”, to detect and monitor glucose levels. One important potential application of this type of RFID device is to help diabetics monitor their glucose levels. This application could eliminate the need for diabetics to monitor their blood sugar levels by pricking their skin and drawing blood several times per day.

Asked for comment on this ground-breaking Phase 1 milestone, Scott R. Silverman, Chairman of VeriChip, said, “We are not only focused on current opportunities for patient identification within our VeriMed Health Link business, but also on the future applications of RFID in healthcare.” Mr. Silverman further stated that the “glucose sensor is a promising example, combining a unique application of the technology and an extremely valuable market. While there is much more to do, development of the binding environment was a big step towards reaching that future.”

VeriChip has a sound hold on the RFID technology that would appear to give it an advantage over its competitors. Earlier this month, VeriChip purchased important human implantable RFID technology related to glucose monitoring from Digital Angel Corporation. VeriChip is now RECEPTORS’ exclusive partner in this area. From here, the companies will begin working on other crucial components of the glucose RFID chip. These components include a biocompatible shield, sensing system components, and development of the sensing to electronics signal transduction system.

Founded in 2001 and located in Delray Beach, Florida, VeriChip Corporation develops, markets, and sells radio frequency identification systems (RFID). These systems are used to identify, locate, and protect people and assets in the healthcare market in the United States and internationally. One of VeriChip’s main product lines is the VeriMed system, a human-implantable RFID microchip. This chip can be used in various patient identification and security applications. VeriChip’s customers include hospitals, physicians, and patients.
