Yesterday, Quick-Med Technologies, Inc. announced that their in-house researchers have completed tests that show their NIMBUS antimicrobial products used in BIOGUARD medical dressings are more effective than the PHMB antimicrobial used in Kerlix-branded medical dressing in a new paper entitled “The Effects of BIOGUARD vs. Kerlix AMD Dressings when used in combination with Dakin’s Solution or SANTYL Ointment.”
Quick-Med develops products and technology for the consumer and healthcare markets, with a focus on infection controlling antimicrobial products. Nimbus recently received De Novo clearance from the US FDA. Since the NIMBUS dressing is non-leaching, there is no risk of bacteria developing resistance. Quick-Med also is producing hand sanitizer product NimbuDerm, and Stay Fresh technology for fabric and clothing sanitization.
Quick-Med has stated that studies show Kerlix deactivates the active ingredient in frequently used collagenase debriding agent SANTYL, while BIOGUARD is compatible with SANTYL and will not reduce its effectiveness. Additionally, BIOGUARD can be used with Dakin’s Solution, a popular wound cleanser based on hypochlorite; whereas the antimicrobial agent in Kerlix dressings is deactivated when brought into contact with hypochlorite.
Gregory Schultz, PhD, University of Florida Research Foundation Professor and past president of the Wound Healing Society, said, “Wound care clinicians need to understand that some combinations of wound dressings and treatments can destructively interact, reducing their effectiveness, while other combinations are potentially helpful.”
Albina Mikhaylova, PhD, Senior Scientist at Quick-Med Technologies, said, “BIOGUARD dressings with NIMBUS antimicrobial technology offer superior versatility and have been designed to allow worry-free use in the increasingly complex wound care environment. NIMBUS is an important antimicrobial technology for medical devices because it doesn’t leach or suffer depletion, doesn’t initiate bacterial resistance, doesn’t interfere with tissue healing, and prevents odor generation.”
