Vuzix Corp. (VUZI) Acquires Nokia License to Develop See-Through Optics

On October 21, Vuzix Corp. announced that the company has entered into an agreement with Nokia to produce see-through waveguide optics components intended for use in near-eye display systems, which would then be used in head- and eyewear-mounted video displays. These displays would be based on see-through Exit Pupil Expanding technology, which is proprietary to Nokia.

Originating with products intended for defense research, Vuzix holds over fifty patents and supplies video eyewear to defense, consumer, and entertainment markets. Vuzix creates technologies that are used in tactical wearable displays, thermal sighting systems, and augmented reality systems. The company has won various awards, such as nine CES Innovations Awards, as well as the RetailVision Best New Product award. Vuzix is based in Rochester, NY, and has offices in the UK and Japan.

Under the terms of the agreement, Vuzix will develop and manufacture both components and products that use Nokia’s technology, while providing Nikoa access to these same products. Vuzix is hopeful that sunglasses-like video eyewear based on the EPE technology that Nokia has been developing over the past ten years.

Paul Travers, Vuzix President and CEO said, “We believe that Nokia’s EPE technology solves a long missing piece in the NED business for creating sunglass-style video eyewear. Integrate this Nokia technology with Vuzix’s advanced display engine developments with partners like Fraunhofer IPMS, and we expect to be able to offer the video glasses that Hollywood and Sci-Fi writers have only been able to imagine.”

Jyri Huopaniemi, Director and Head of the Nokia Research Center Media Technologies Laboratory said, “Vuzix’ specialized expertise in video eyewear will be critical in driving the further development of EPE technology and ensuring its integration in new consumer products. We are excited to be enabling a new era of innovation.”
