AirTouch Communications today announced the sale of 1,000 of its X1500 wireless device to distribution partner UniCell Ghana Ltd. The initial order of the device, which allows home and office users to receive voice, text, and data without landline or computer, represents the company’s first step into the African market.
AirTouch president and CEO Hide Kanakubo said the company expects Ghana to be the “gateway to the Economic Community of the West African States (ECOWAS).”
AirTouch designs and markets wireless telecommunications devices internationally, with a focus on countries where cost and geography have negatively impacted the deployment of landlines. Establishing this market presence in Ghana is one of two significant achievements for AirTouch, says Kanakubo, in reference to the company’s recent announcement that it is an approved vendor of Telefonos de Mexico S A B de CV (Telmex), and that it has received an initial order for sale of AirTouch’s patent pending SmartLinX™ (U250).
Per today’s announced agreement, the companies collectively plan to sell X1500 to several mobile operators, including Airtel, Tigo, Glo and Vodafone.
“The agreement with UniCell and the recent order from Telmex are two key milestones we have worked hard to achieve,” Kanakubo stated in the press release.
