Transgenomic, Inc. (TBIO.OB) Appoints Renowned Dr. Eric Johnson to Medical Director for Lab Services Position

Transgenomic, www.transgenomic.com – a biotech company focused on high-sensitivity genetic variation and mutation analysis for a variety of detection applications, reported today creation of a Medical Director for Laboratory Services position and the subsequent retention of 20-year genetics industry veteran, Eric Johnson, Ph.D., to fill it.

Dr. Johnson will apply his vast experience in research and diagnostics to guiding TBIO’s strategic vision and his duties as overseer of day-to-day activities at the Company’s Molecular Diagnostics Services (MDS) lab.

An excellent choice by TBIO, which makes products like:

• WAVE® Systems with disposables, genetic variation detection and single or double strand DNA/RNA analysis/purification
• SURVEYOR® Mutation Detection Kits/Check-It Kits, DNA mutation detector protocols/reagents
• HANABI automated chromosome harvesting systems – vastly superior cytogenetic analysis in terms of lab productivity/consistency

President and CEO of TBIO, Craig Tuttle, underscored how vital Dr. Johnson’s Neuroscience training and expertise in genetic test development would be for solidifying the Company’s “market leadership position” in MDS.

Dr. Johnson expressed his excitement over joining TBIO at such an “important inflection point” in the arc of the Company’s success story – just as the promise of personalized medicine is becoming a reality – and said that he couldn’t wait to work with TBIO technologies like COLD-PCR (typical polymerase chain reaction protocol co-amplification at low temp).

A brief overview of Dr. Johnson’s superb qualifications follows:

• Most recently founder of Barrow Neurological Institute’s Neurovascular/Epilepsy Genetics Research Lab, where he drove BioBanking efforts for several rare disease family groups, alone and as founding director of the Genetic Alliance BioBank’s DNA and Tissue Archive
• Founding director, Molecular Diagnostics and BioBanking Laboratories at St. Joseph’s Hospital (Phoenix)
• Director of diagnostic testing, Prevention Genetics
• CSO and Clinical Laboratory Director, Iverson Genetic Diagnostics which specializes in personalized medicine genetic diagnostics
• Widely published author covering several epilepsy and neurovascular-related genes
• An expert in translational research, with presentations at over 50 genetics conferences, with thusly proven ability to move tests from the lab bench to the clinic
• B.A. in biology/chemistry, Boston University
• Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology/Neuroscience, University of Pennsylvania
• Post-doctoral work in Psychiatry and Neurosurgery, Yale
• Advanced training in genetics, Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine
