Composite Technology Corp. (CPTC.OB) Finds Success with High Voltage Power Lines and Wind Turbines

All the consumer wants to do is flip a switch and have the lights comes on. What the consumer fails to see is the technology and physics of how electricity is generated and transported. Add in the environment, population trends and an aging infrastructure, and the entire process of getting the lights to stay on becomes a bit more interesting. Finding and investing in companies that make the process of keeping the lights on in an efficient and cost effective way is one opportunity to profit as people continue to demand that there be light.

Composite Technology Corp., a manufacturer and marketer of electrical energy efficiency products, develops, manufactures and markets high voltage cable and associated components for high voltage electricity transmission. Through its DeWind unit, the company also engages in the manufacture of 1.25-2.0 megawatt wind turbines.

With quite a bit of talk swirling around the Obama environmental and infrastructure plan, one might think that the company would be giving the U.S. electrical grid and power generation markets its full attention. It looks, however, that the company is working and finding acceptance globally to sell its environmentally friendly and efficient products. Germany and Argentina have installed the company’s DeWind turbine while its Indonesian deal will keep it busy for an estimated two years once the Indonesian company achieves compliance.

Perhaps the largest draw that the company brings to the power products market is its ability to provide products that synchronize with existing electrical grids easily and efficiently. Its cable products allow for utilities and other transmission companies to offer on demand power with less initial power generation (to get the electricity from generating station to customer a larger amount of electricity needs to be generated then is asked for because of the resulting power loss as the power is transported) which increases efficiency, eases the balancing of power loads (reducing brown outs and blackouts) and reduces costs.

China has taken the largest advantage of the company’s products with Europe lagging just behind. China’s preponderance of revenue generation for the company may stem from its aggressive infrastructure program, but also from its large rural electrification needs, commitment to alternative energies and the larger number of company cable licensees in the Asian region. Composite Technology does seem to be emerging from its adolescence and is maturing at just about the right time to take advantage of infrastructure and environmental realities. If it can manage its way through the governmental tangle that is sure to follow infrastructure building, it will surely benefit in the coming years.
