For many years, the major four sports, A.K.A. the “Big Four,” in the United States have been football, baseball, basketball and hockey. While other sports have generated large incomes and interest such as boxing and wrestling, the “Big Four” seemed untouchable. The Fight Zone and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) may change the way the world looks at sports and MMA may sneak into the “Big Four” in the very near future.
MMA is a full contact sport that includes a mix of boxing, wrestling and martial arts. While violent and controversial, the sport has an incredible amount of live and television appeal. While many stadiums and casino-type forms have drawn large crowds for MMA events, television has become the main-stay for this young sport.
The leader in the MMA arena is Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). UFC will likely exceed $250 million in revenues in 2008 and a significant part of this income is generated from pay-per-view events which typically run from $20 to $75 per viewing and garner an average of between 10,000 and 50,000 orders. While MMA powerhouses such as UFC are becoming household names, companies such as The Fight Zone are starting to make a mark in this sport which is growing at a rapid pace.
The Fight Zone, Inc. is a young and prospering company based out of Colorado that is dedicated to developing and promoting MMA sports and its athletes to the world. The Fight Zone has a reputation for developing and producing world class fighters and is becoming a major challenge to UFC.
Perhaps the biggest reason companies such as UFC and The Fight Zone are taking flight is due to the demographic appeal of the sport. The target audience of MMA is suburban males in the 18-34 age range. Many of these consumers are affluent and view this sport as “their own” and have challenged hockey and the fourth element of the “Big Four.”
While hockey is still followed in the United States, it has always been viewed as “Canada’s Game” and the NHL strike, the game has simply not recovered viewership. With the decline of hockey and the fact that the MMA fans have the money to fund their beloved sport, company’s like UFC and The Flight Zone could lead MMA into the hearts of all sports fans, and with this new found success, the sky could be the limit.
