Platinum Studios, Inc. and producer Mark Canton announced that they will be teaming up to immediately begin work on bringing the Platinum Studios comic book “Atlantis Rising” into an ongoing franchise for the silver screen. The film is set against an undersea civilization that began over 10,000 years ago, and whose presence is unknown to the surface population. According to Platinum Studios Chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, “’Atlantis Rising’ is a provocative sci-fi thriller that at its core brings up the question: whose planet is this?”
Atlantis Rising was created by Rosenberg and first published as a five-issue mini-series that had been previously optioned to Dreamworks. The rights to production have been re-gained by Platinum Studios, paving the way for the up-and-coming film series.
Canton, who is also CEO of Atmosphere Entertainment, has seen success in his career on multiple occasions, such as Relativity’s “Immortals,” which has grossed more than $210 million in global box office sales. Other recent works by Atmosphere include Warner Bros’ “300,” Paramount Pictures’ “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and Summit’s “Letters to Juliet,” starring Amanda Sayfried and Vanessa Redgrave.
Canton sees some solid potential for the new movie series. “’Atlantis Rising’ has the franchise potential of ‘Men in Black’ which I green lit for Scott while at Sony’s Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Companies,” said Mark Canton. “I’m looking forward to bringing it to the screen with Platinum as a dynamic, state of the art action thriller.”
