BioSolar Inc., a leader in the research and development of bio-based materials from renewable plant sources for use in photovoltaic solar panels, announced that its BioBacksheet material technology will be presented at the 241st American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting & Exposition, which will be held in Anaheim, California during the week of March 27, 2011.
The paper, which is titled “Plastic Materials from Bio-based Nylon 11 and Filled Nylon 11”, was co-authored by Dr. David Lee, the President and CEO for Biosolar; Dr. Stanley Levy, the company’s Chief Technology Officer and BioSolar’s Scientific Advisor Dr. Charles Carraher Jr., an acclaimed scientist in the field of chemistry and materials.
Dr. Lee stated, “We are honored to have Dr. Carraher represent BioSolar at this prestigious ACS Meeting. Dr. Carraher’s unmatched scientific knowledge and leadership in the field of bio-based polymer materials have been the foundation for BioSolar’s recent success in the commercialization of the world’s first bio-based photovoltaic backsheet.”
Dr. Carraher is currently the Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies. Dr. Carraher previously held the positions of the Dean of the College of Science at FAU, Chair of Science Division at the University of South Dakota, and the Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Wright State University. He also holds numerous awards and recognitions which include being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Chemists and being selected as part of the inaugural class of Fellows for the ACS-PMSE and ACS-PC. He was also given the Florida Award in 1992, awarded to give recognition to outstanding chemists in the southeast region of the US and recognized as a fellow in the American Chemical Society in 2010.
Dr. Carraher’s research has paved the way for the creation of over 70 new families of polymers, as well as newer methods for their synthesis and characterization. His primary areas of research that relate to the BioSolar business include modification of biomaterials, high strength materials, geo-membranes, use of natural materials as structural and coatings materials, synthesis and characterization of biomedical and bioactive materials, identification of materials, conductive and semiconductive polymers, thermally stable materials and high temperature superconductors. Over the course of an extraordinary career, Dr. Carraher has published more than 60 books and over 1,000 articles, has chaired countless national and international committees, served as a science advisor to Senator McGovern, and has helped shape the American education system for K-12 to post-graduate education in the field for polymer chemistry and materials. Dr. Carraher also holds a Ph.D in Chemistry, which he obtained from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
BioSolar Inc., a developmental stage company, engages in the research and development of bio-based materials from renewable plant sources for the use in photovoltaic solar panels. The company mainly focuses on the development of bio-based photovoltaic module backsheets that meet the thermal and durability requirements of solar module manufacturing processes for conventional crystalline cell designs, as well as certain thin film photovoltaic devices. The company, formerly known as BioSolar Labs, Inc., changed its name to BioSolar Inc. in June of 2006. The company is based in Santa Clarita, California.
