Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. disclosed details today regarding an implementation of the Company’s robust, multi-purpose Bend Sensor® technology in a proposed Home Monitoring Presence Detection System which will be developed under an agreement with an undisclosed company.
The proprietary FLXT Bend Sensor® technology is basically a coated substrate-like plastic which can act as a sensor for a variety of environmental variables or as a durable switch. The proposed application would incorporate such switches into structures, furniture and other household appurtenances to create a virtual nodal network of sensors that would monitor an individual in real time and trigger alarms if suspicious conditions are met.
President of FLXT Clark Mower spoke of the time and effort put into R&D for this application of the Bend Sensor® as evidence of the “tremendous potential” that it represents, especially after “recent design changes” led to a new beta version of the test sensor as unveiled at a recent tradeshow.
2000 US Census Bureau statistics indicated that 12.8% of the U.S. population is over 65, with another 25% ages 46-64, meaning that as the people who are 46 start to reach age 65, the percentage of those over the age of 65 will be 16% of the entire population.
This is a huge market for people looking to create solutions for aging family members via such an in-home monitoring system, which is largely passive and therefore comfortable.
According to a recent report, “An Aging World: 2008”, for the first time ever, sometime in the next decade older people will outnumber children, and in the next 30 years those over 65 will double to 1.3B, or from 7% to 14% of earth’s population.
The number of people over 65 is increasing worldwide at a rate of 870k/month, and women, who statistically outlive men, more and more find themselves living alone – in fact over half of all women over 65 are on their own, compounding health risks due to isolation and unattended health care considerations.
